Am I a Mean kitty owner?

As long as you don't mean you literally gave him the boot then no, you're not being cruel. Or you are and I am too because i don't let my youngest cat into my bedroom because he tries to claim it by marking (yes, he's spayed) the room. Both cats used to try to get into that room because I think to cats, a closed door is like a red rag to a bull but they're over it now.
